Writing a Business Letter

Writing a good business letter in Russian can be easy. This guide shows you how to structure a business letter and what phrases to use to make it look professional.

Russian business letters consist of seven parts:

Letterhead (includes the name and address of a sender)
Dateline
Inside address (name and address of an addressee)
Salutation
Body
Complementary closing
Signature

Standard Phrases

Any business letter usually includes standard phrases. Use the table to present your ideas clearly and give a professional tone to your letter.

The Salutation
Уважаемые господа, Уважаемый/ая господин/госпожа, Уважаемая редакция	(use if you don't know who you are writing to)
Уважаемый д-р Давыдов д-р = доктор	(use if you know the person you are writing to and have formal relationships with him or her)
Уважаемый Сергей Иванович, Дорогой Андрей Петрович	(use if you have some kind of informal relationships with the person (friend)
The Complementary Closing
С уважением, С наилучшими пожеланиями, С уважением Ваш (Ваша) [your name], Искренне Ваш (Ваша) [your name]	suitable in any situation
The Reference
Благодарим за письмо от ...	Thank you for your letter of ...
В ответ на Ваше письмо от...	In response to your letter of ...
Ссылаясь на наше письмо от... сообщаем, что ...	Referring to your letter of ... we inform you that...
Что касается Вашей просьбы, (Вашего заказа, Вашей претензии)...	As to your request (your order, your claim)...
Closing Phrases

Надеемся на скорый ответ	Looking forward to hearing from you soon...
Просим сообщить нам, как можно скорее	Please, inform us in the shortest possible time
Ожидаем Вашего согласия (одобрения, подтверждения)	Looking forward to receiving your consent (approval, confirmation)
Binding Phrases
Считаем необходимым (важным, целесообразным) отметить...	We find it necessary (important, reasonable) to note...
