The Bottom Line - This interactive course is a good choice for beginners looking to learn and practice the basic Russian vocabulary on a variety of topics. It does not teach any tricky academic grammar. However, by hearing and practicing authentic everyday speech, both beginning and intermediate students will be able to improve their speaking ability and reinforce their vocabulary. We would recommend to have this course only as a supplement to your college textbooks and academic courses.

This two CD set will help absolute beginners to get started with the Russian language. You will not learn any grammar with this course but rather will have a chance to learn basic Russian words and phrases on a variety of topics.
The first CD is organized as a series of playing exercises to help you learn Russian beginning words and phrases, such as foods, colors, body parts, numbers, time expressions, and countries. You will be offered to look at the pictures and hear the names of the objects they illustrate. Then you can listen to and record your pronunciation of words in groups of four, eight or ten. Finally, there is an option to print a picture dictionary for future reviews.
The second CD is the next level-up from the first. It introduces ten more topical sections, such as people, food, animals, various phrases, directions, calendar, weather conditions, and numbers. The listening exercises become more complicated here as compared to the first CD. You will be offered to listen to a set of sentences in Russian which give clues for the correct answers. The Recording studio on this CD will let you listen to phrases and record them, then listen to your pronunciation and compare it with pronunciation of native speakers. You can even listen to a dialog with your voice featured in it. Other teaching exercises include TV quiz, dictations and worksheets. After you have scored enough points playing language games and learning the language you will be able to print a graduation certificate!
Ask them in the Russian Questions and Answers — a place for students, teachers and native Russian speakers to discuss Russian grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and other aspects of the Russian language.
