Lucky foreigners
As a newcomer to any Russian social gathering, you already have one trump in your hands without having done anything special: You are a foreigner.
A Russian girl’s fascination with foreign guys acquired mythological qualities not only in Russia, but way beyond its borders. Which doesn’t mean that this stereotype is completely untrue. Many Russian women do indeed seem to be attracted to foreigners, and that for several reasons.

Reasons for love
The fascination goes back to the Soviet times when people were not allowed to travel abroad, and every foreigner was regarded as an exotic and therefore interesting representative of a different world – and a much better world, as many suspected. The practically-minded girls thought at once: This is my ticket to the Western paradise, so I’d better love it, or just grab and hold it. Others were (and are) just generally curious and fascinated by the unknown.
Another reason was – and remains – the widespread bad reputation of Russian men. It’s thought that a really nice Russian guy is hard to find: They all are either weak mama’s boys, or unfeeling machos, or both. No match for a great Russian woman. Foreigners, on the other hand, are reputedly much more caring and understanding, they are ready to listen and to treat one as a person and not as a servant.
But whatever the reason, enjoy the consequences – and try to keep up with your image! It’s a shame that Russian men don’t seem to have developed the same fascination towards Western women – but who knows? Maybe it’s just a part of their bad reputation.
