Definition:

to try to understand or solve smth. difficult;
to break one's head over smth.

Example:

Он ломает голову над задачей по математике уже целый час.

He has been breaking his head over the problem in mathematics for an hour.

Definition:

to stop thinking about smth. or smb.;
to get out of one's head

Example:

Если вам приснился плохой сон, постарайтесь выбросить его из головы.

If you had a bad dream try to get it out of your head.

 

Отдавать себе отчёт
(ahtdahvaht' seebye ahtchyot)

Definition:

to be aware of;
to realize

Example 1:

Я отдаю себе полный отчёт в том, что сделал.

I fully realize what I did.

Example 2:

Мы помогали ему не отдавая себе отчёта в том, что он нас даже не поблагодарит.

We were helping him without being aware of the fact that he would not even thank us.
 

Ума не приложу
(oomah nyeh preelahzhoo)

Definition:

не знаю, не в состоянии сообразить, понять что-нибудь, догадаться о чём-нибудь

Translation:

It's beyond me,
I give up

Example:

Ума не приложу, как вам удалось написать такую книгу.

It's beyond me to understand how you managed to write such a book.

 

Голова на плечах
(gahlahvah nah plyehchahkh)

Definition:

кто-либо умён, сообразителен, толков

Translation:

to have a head (up) on one's shoulders

Example:

Ты за него не беспокойся, у него голова на плечах, он знает что делает.

Don't worry because of him, he has a head on his shoulders, he knows what he does.

 

Ловить на лету
(lahveet' nah leetoo)

Definition:

1) быстро, мгновенно понимать или усваивать
2) жадно, очень внимательно слушать, стараясь ничего не упускать

Translation:

1) to grasp, comprehend instantly
2) to hang on one's lips

Example 1:

Этот студент очень смышлёный и ловит на лету всё, что говорит преподователь.

This student is very intelligent and grasps everything that the instructor says.

Example 2:

Он рассказывал о походе очень интересно. Дети ловили на лету каждое его слово.

He was telling about the excursion very interesting. Children were hanging on his lips.

 

Пролить свет (на)
(prahleet' svyet)

Definition:

to shed light (on)

Example:

Как мы ни старались, но нам не удалось пролить свет на недавние загадочные события.

However hard we tried we could not shed light on recent enigmatic events.
 

С луны свалился *
(s looni svahleelsyah)

Definition:

does not understand the ABC of the position;
must have come out of the Ark

Example:

Не знаю, откуда у него такие старомодные понятия. Прямо как с луны свалился.

I don't know where he gets his old-fashioned ideas from. He must have come out of the Ark.

* "свалися" is a masculine form. Use "свалилась" (svahleelahs') when talking about a woman.
